Sanath Jayasuriya In Hot Water: Officially Charged With Violating ICC Anti-Corruption Code

In a shocking turn of events, the ICC today confirmed that former Sri Lankan cricket captain and head of national selections Sanath Jayasuriya has been charged with offences related to anti-corruption investigations.

The ICC said Jayasuriya has been charged with violating two clauses of the ICC anti-corruption code.

Sanath Jayasuriya

The clauses Jayasuriya has allegedly violated are;

Article 2.4.6 – Failure or refusal, without compelling justification, to cooperate with any investigation carried out by the ACU, including failure to provide accurately and completely any information and/or documentation requested by the ACU as part of such investigation.

2) Article 2.4.7 – Obstructing or delaying any investigation that may be carried out by the ACU, including concealing, tampering with or destroying any documentation or other information that may be relevant to that investigation and/or that may be evidence or may lead to the discovery of evidence of corrupt conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code.”

The former Sri Lankan cricketer has been given two weeks, from 15 October 2018, to respond to the charges, against him.

Sources close to Jayasuriya said he would respond to the allegations levelled by the ICC through his lawyers within the given period of time.

A comprehensive report on the findings of the ICC Anti-Corruption committee has been handed over to President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sports Minister Fiazser Mustapha.

Editor’s note – The earlier headline of this news item and the first paragraph have been changed as the ICC charges against Jayasuriya did not refer to individual match-fixing allegations against him, but his failure to cooperate with anti-corruption investigations – still a grave offence under the ICC anti-corruption code. We regret any inconvenience.

I am astounded by the suggestion that Sanath was some kind of incorruptible individual. Unfortunately, his patron who should be charged with “team-selection fixing” Mahinda Rajapaksha, when he used a Presidential fiat to keep Sanath in the team after he was past the “best before date” will not be touched.
As usual it is the (corrupt) little minnows who get netted while the criminal sharks swim free!
One thing that can be said for this forum is the fact that so many of those hiding behind old and new pseudonyms are out of the woodwork uttering their usual imbecilities. Funny, they are, but only up to a point, unfortunately.

“……keep Sanath in the team after he was past the “best before date” will………”.
It has become the rule rather than exception, the world over, for hangers on to hang on past the best-before-date.
“….so many of those hiding behind old and new pseudonyms are out of the woodwork…..”.
Some of the new pseudonyms are unpronounceable and identical imbecilities appear under these names.
      .
The outcome of this investigation might be naught but Lanka is being laundered in international media.

‘As usual it is the (corrupt) little minnows who get netted while the criminal sharks swim free!’

Never a truer word said. Bookie-Pala and his two close buddies must be chuckling at the fun of it all.

Meanwhile, the ICC remains in denial – for them, shooting the monkey is easier than targeting the organ grinder (whose has the pockets of high and mighty).

ICC is politically motivated. It’s not charging that Muttia Tamil fellow. It’s coming after the Sinhalese.

I never said ICC is run by full of Sri Lankans. As a Muslim woman, your head will be chopped off in Afghanistan for learning to read and write.

Not a surprise. See the clauses. Failure to cooperate, obstruct, tamper, conceal, destroy evidence……etc . are some age old behavior/tactics of Lankans including politicians and white collar criminals. Sanath being a true patriot/lankan is following the foot steps of the fore fathers. What is not mentioned is lying, cheating , deception, criminal intent and the rest. Same with Rajapaksaa, thaj/lasantha cases, Cardinal refusing human rights, Duminda, refusal of international involvement, abusing UN , padeniyas threats, Shiranthi being kicked out………the list goes on and on.

Not surprised. This is a guy, not content with the god given talent, had to stoop to the low levels, hanging on to fame & glory instead of retiring gracefully. His political bum sucking, seeking cheap popularity & decadent personal life shows his true colours which even his international fame in wielding the cricket bat can’t mask. If he has any guts, he should resign immediately. Whether he was implicated in match fixing or not, he has failed in his duty as head of selection.

MR corrupted Sanath, MR forced Upul and few others to get treatment from his fraud doctor (I dont remember GMOA having issue then) and he was suspended for use of controlled substance. MR used influence in making eleventh hour changes and bringing Sanath to play world cup finals and we all know what happened( self centered move for Sanath to retire in glory and for Rajapaksas to claim all credits and glory) MR politicized the cricket board like no other , where corruption and abuse took control and left Lankan cricket bankrupt. MR even had cricketers to canvass and campaign for him.Mr had clowns promoted to sports ministry who had the audacity to question the cricketers like Malinga, Sanga and Mahela. MR also tried the same with Dilshan and few others but I guess they were fortunate to not to end up Sanath. Then of course MR made his money in white elephants like play ground/stadium which has left the board with huge losses. This is Rajapaksa contribution to cricket alone. Imagine the rest.

MR corrupted the total political system putting thugs, singers, sportsmen, monks, actors, beauty queens, models in the parliament on the basis of either intimidating voters through thugs or playing on peoples likes and dislikes based on entertainment or mistaken devotions. A vast majority of such people entered the parliament are incompetent and self centered loud mouths. This guy I believe is one of them, and he used his popularity and position to indulge in corrupt activities while pretending to be a man with integrity. I have been reading elsewhere that large sums of money that broadcasters paid to the cricket board, for transmission rights of international matches, have found there way into private foreign accounts. I am wondering if some of those accounts belonged to this guy. Karma follows you, and it looks like now is the pay up time. I hope the same natural law will soon apply to the Central Bank Robbers in this government and its gang of criminal minded businessmen cohorts.

When SL Cricket got politicised, the worst parts of the culture of corruption/nepotism/impunity crept in.
The Sanath episode might well be a diversion. The real political battle may be to take control of SLC.
Evidently ICC wanted Sanath’s mobile. Unless ordered by the courts, no one need to.
    Has ICC got politicised too?

I say, in which Suddas land is it required to handover your personal phone for them to make a case against you???

Don’t talk nonsense. If the ICC has evidence that Sanath Jayasuirya has done anything illegal according to the laws of Sri Lanka or any other country, let them file a case and have him answer for it.

He is UNDER NO OBLIGATION to allow them to enter his house, require his bank accounts or check his cell phones.

These white shits go around the world making the rest of the world look guilty and feel guilty, when the real criminals are running their own countries.

As I said before, if they have evidence – PRESENT IT. Otherwise SHUT UP and go back to whence you came from!

We can F+up Cricket on our own. We do not need help from bookies, bettors or match-fixers! We just hand the job to our 225 jesters at the Diyawanna.

      Upul:
How can they “present evidence'” when your buddy, one of the band of “Sinhala weerayas” who’ve brought total disgrace to this country, CONCEAL it?

As for Mr. Jayasuriya, all he seems to have distinguished himself by is making videos in rather doubtful taste with some female partner. Perhaps, he should be given a Veera paddakkama of some kind for that achievement, don’t you think rather than be taken to task for criminal behaviour?

If you give your head a shake the act might result in deafening silence judging by your display of “intelligence.”
